The 21st season of The Bachelor premiered on January 2, 2017. It featured 36-year-old Nick Viall, a software sales executive.

The season re-aired in a shortened version on August 31, 2020, as a part of The Bachelor: The Greatest Seasons - Ever!.

This marks Nick's fourth appearance in the Bachelor franchise. He was previously rejected by Andi Dorfman on the 10th season and by Kaitlyn Bristowe on the 11th season of The Bachelorette as well as appearing on the 3rd season of Bachelor in Paradise.

He ultimately chose to propose to Vanessa Grimaldi.

Filming and development[]

Casting and contestants[]

On August 30, 2016, during episode 4 of the 2nd season of Bachelor in Paradise: After Paradise and while the 3rd season of Bachelor in Paradise was still airing, Nick Viall was announced as the next Bachelor. Prior to Viall's selection in the series, fan favorites Luke Pell and Chase McNary, both from the 12th season of The Bachelorette were considered for the lead role on the show, according to host Chris Harrison.

Production[]

The season traveled to many places including Viall's home state of Wisconsin; New Orleans, Louisiana; Saint Thomas in United States Virgin Islands; Bimini, the Bahamas and Finnish Lapland. With appearances on this season include Olympians Michelle Carter, Allyson Felix and Carl Lewis, famous boyband Backstreet Boys, country singer Chris Lane and Lolo. During production, the producers moved the Wisconsin date week from the original destination of Charleston, South Carolina when Hurricane Matthew hit the city. Host Chris Harrison told the trip was to be headed to Kiawah Island. The reason of the decision has not been disclosed.

Rachel Lindsay was chosen as the bachelorette for the 13th season of The Bachelorette, while this season was still airing.

Raven Gates confirmed on After the Final Rose that she would be competing on the 4th season of Bachelor in Paradise. Also participating in that season are, Alexis Waters, Corinne Olympios, Danielle Maltby, Jasmine Goode, Kristina Schulman, Lacey Mark, and Taylor Nolan.

Kristina Schulman, Angela Amezcua, and Whitney Fransway competed in the 6th season of Bachelor in Paradise.

5 "Week 5: New Orleans" January 30, 2017
The 13 remaining bachelorettes visit New Orleans, where Nick selects one lucky lady to accompany him on a date. Later, 10 women are chosen for a night of thrills at a haunted plantation; and two vengeful rivals go on the dreaded two-on-one date in the Big Easy's mystical bayou, where the trio encounter a group of voodoo worshipers.

The nine remaining bachelorettes visit the U.S. Virgin Islands, where Nick learns the details of a dark-haired beauty's heartbreaking life. Later, a group date with six ladies goes terribly wrong; and a two-on-one outing sends Nick's journey into a tailspin.

All of Nick's relationships are called into question as the remaining women deal with Nick's admission that the process may not be working for him. Nick seeks council from Chris Harrison about his predicament.

Nick meets the families of the final four bachelorettes when he goes on hometown dates. Later, everyone meets up in New York City for the rose ceremony but a surprise visitor to Nick's hotel could alter everything.
9 "Week 9, pt. 1: Lapland, Finland" February 27, 2017
Andi Dorfman surprises Nick just before he hands out roses to three of the four remaining bachelorettes. From there, Nick and his final three travel to Lapland, Finland, for a week of cold, snowy days and warm, romantic nights.
10 "Week 9, pt. 2: Finland" March 6, 2017
Nick takes the final three women on dates. One lucky lady goes with Nick to a reindeer farm, where they discuss their future in front of a roaring fire. Another beauty joins Nick for a plunge into icy waters and then a quick warm up in a sauna and hot tub.
11 "The Women Tell All" March 6, 2017
Nick Viall faces some of the most memorable bachelorettes he sent home as they discuss the season. Also: bloopers from the season; and a sneak peek at the emotional final week of Nick's journey.

Nick must choose between the final two bachelorettes.

On August 25, 2017, Nick and Vanessa announced that they had decided to end their engagement.

Raven Gates is engaged to Adam Gottschalk whom she met on the 4th season of Bachelor in Paradise.

Astrid Loch is now engaged to Kevin Wendt whom she met on the 5th season of Bachelor in Paradise.

Rachel Lindsay appeared on the 13th season of The Bachelorette. She met and got engaged to Bryan Abasolo. They were married on August 24, 2019.

Whitney Fransway dated Connor Saeli whom she met on the 6th season of Bachelor in Paradise. They announced their split in September 2019.

Angela Amezcua was in an 8-month relationship with Clay Harbor from the 14th season of The Bachelorette.
